Game Recap

In the early 1980s, Lloyd C. Bird and Varina were heated rivals in the old Group AA Dominion District. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Bird and Varina renewed their rivalry in the Group AAA playoffs. That rivalry has come full circle as Bird and Varina met Friday night at Dutchman Field with the Skyhawks besting the visitors from across the James 49 to 9.

Bird won the toss and deferred to the second half. Varina’s high powered offense got an early first down and then the linebacker duo of Rayshard Ashby and Isiah Moore took over, shutting down the Blue Devil’s first drive and forcing a punt. Bird started their first drive behind the pounding running of Shedrick McCall and moved down the field, deep into Varina territory aided by a chop block personal foul penalty when Marcus Banks hit wide receiver Pinky Wiley for 21 yards and the touchdown.

Again, Varina got into Skyhawk territory, only to have their drive stopped by Demetrick Atkins’ interception. One play was all it took for McCall to go 58 yards for his first of two touchdowns on the night. The Blue Devils finally were able to sustain as drive and dented the end zone on a 9 yard run by Stephen Richardson. The Skyhawks responded on the ensuing kickoff when Devonte Wright went 95 yards and restored the lead to 14 points as the first quarter came to a close.

Early in the second quarter, McCall scored again, this time on a 6 yard run. The Skyhawks built the lead to 28 when fullback Emmanuel Conway broke through the Varina defensive line for 28 yards. Conway finished the night with 38 yards and one score. Varina finished the first half scoring when the attempted punt by Keaton Riley had the snap fly over the punter and through the end zone for a safety.

Each team exchanged a couple of punts in the third quarter. As the quarter was ending, the Skyhawks mounted a sustained drive which culminated in a 15 yard run to the corner of the end zone by quarterback Marcus Banks. On the next series, Pinky Wiley intercepted a Blue Devils errant pass and took it to the end zone 42 yards to close out the scoring for the night.

Key performers for the night were Shedrick McCall with 131 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns, Pinky Wiley with an offensive and defensive touchdown and Devonte Wright with his 95 yard kickoff return. On the defensive side of the ball, which limited Varina to 150 total yards, were Rayshard Ashby with 11 solo tackles, 3 assists, 3 tackles for loss and 2 sacks, Isiah Moore with 6 solo tackles, 4 assists, 2 tackles for loss and a hurried pass. Q. Armstrong chipped in with 6 solo tackles and Cory Bright had 8 solo tackles.

The Skyhawks have now made the playoffs for 18 straight years, have 7 straight 10 win seasons and have gone 6 straight years with at least 1 playoff victory. Next week, the Skyhawks will travel across the James to take on the Panthers of Hermitage. It seems like this matchup is repeated almost yearly. Last years the Panthers came out on top, maybe this year, there’ll be a little payback. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm at Chester Fritz stadium on the campus of Hermitage High School.
