Game Recap

It’s the second week of the playoffs, so it’s time for what seems to be an annual event, as the Lloyd C. Bird Skyhawks traveled to take on the Hermitage Panthers at Chester Fritz Stadium. This was the 7th straight year that the Skyhawks and Panthers had met in the second week of the playoffs. Last year, the Skyhawks were knocked from not only the undefeated ranks, but also out of the playoffs by the Panthers; this year the Skyhawks returned the favor in defeating the Panthers 27 to 24.

Bird won the toss and deferred their choice. In what originally looked like a scoring free for all, the Panthers drove down the field, but their drive stalled and had to settle for a Nick Burton 36 yard field goal. That first drive would come back to haunt the Panthers as the Skyhawks, behind the power running of Shedrick McCall, drove for 80 yards to take the lead 7-3. On their next possession, the Skyhawks scored again, this time on a 34 yard run from McCall after stopping the Hermitage drive on a Demetrick Atkins interception.

The Panthers got their offense on track, scoring twice on passes from backup quarterback James Carney to Nasir Himes, the first for 19 yards and the second for 10. The first half ended with Hermitage ahead 17 to 14.

Bird received the second half kickoff but fumbled the snap on the first play. Hermitage recovered and looked to extend their lead, only to turn the ball over on downs. The Skyhawks regained the lead, one that they would not relinquish, on an punishing run by McCall for 46 yards. Hermitage came out on fire, but had one drive stopped on an Isiah Moore interception and another on a fumble recovery by Cory Bright. The Skyhawks and Panthers exchanged a couple of punts and Bird finally put an exclamation point on its scoring, this time with McCall’s fourth touchdown of the night from 35 yards out.

Hermitage was not done, returning the kickoff to the Skyhawks 35 and scoring, again on a pass from Carney to Hines from 10 yards out. The Panthers tried the on side kick, but Pinky Wiley covered the ball on the Bird 44. Two carries by McCall gave the Skyhawks a first down with 40 seconds left on the clock and Hermitage with only 2 timeouts. Marcus Banks took a knee on three straight snaps and the celebration began on the Bird sideline.

Shedrick McCall finished the night with 251 yards on 31 carries and 4 touchdowns. C. J. Donaldson added 69 yards rushing. On the defensive side of the ball, Rayshard Ashby had 11 solo tackles, 5 for loss and a quarterback sack on Carney that was straight out of the NFL. Ashby and Moore hurried the Hermitage quarterback all night, resulting in two intentional grounding penalties. Bright contributed 6 solo tackles and a fumble recovery, while Isiah Moore had 9 solo tackles and a pass interception.

Next up for the Skyhawks are the Springers of Highland Springs High School who will host the Skyhawks next Saturday with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 pm.
