Congratulations to the Boys Basketball team for bringing home their first State Championship! They defeated Bethel with a score of 65-52. From the start of the game Bird had all the control and that showed as they went into the first quarter with a 16-8 lead.

This whole season Bird has been dominating the 5A Region (27-1). They can account it to the hard work they’ve put in and Troy Mann’s coaching style. From previous schools he compiled a coaching style that was just right for his team. Yet, it wasn’t as easy for the kids to notice at first; Mann’s had this to say to RVA GameBreak, “As a coach, we’re salesmen. It took me a while to convince the athletes to buy into what I was selling. [This is] exactly what I envisioned.”

A few years past and athletes have come and gone but this year’s team turned a vision into reality. Not only did they buy into the coaching style but they built an unbreakable team chemistry that improved their game on the court. “We hang out with each other all day, every day. We build that bond over the season. It helps on the court,” Mario Haskett said to RVA GameBreak.

Prominent players Johquin “Pinky” Wiley, Jyles Webster, Jaylen Dillard, and Cam Henry all bonded together and made history. The team as a whole did a phenomenal job this season and the community can’t wait to see what’s in store for them next year.  Go Skyhawks !
