Game Recap

The Skyhawks donned their road whites for another away game as they traveled to “The Swamp” at James River High School and proceeded to hand the Rapids their second loss of the season 35 – 6.

Bird was led by the rushing of C. J. Donaldson, who carried the ball 22 times for 179 yards and 3 touchdowns. Bird held James River on their first series and behind the steady running of Donaldson, moved the ball 48 yards, the final 37 on Donaldson’s third carry of the game to lead 6 – 0 at the end of the first quarter.

Bird appeared to continue to pour it own, except that the Skyhawks 3rd, 4th and 5th drives of the game ended in lost fumbles. Finally righting the ship, due to the Rapids own fumble, which was recovered by Davion Mundin, who raised 71 yards down the sidelines to give Bird the lead at 14 – 0 after Banks hit Battle for the two point conversion. With 31 seconds remaining in the half, Donaldson scored again, this time from 2 yards out and that pushed the lead to 21 – 0. The Rapids made a desperate attempt to get on the scoreboard before halftime, but on the final play, the pass from Graham Scholl was caught out of bounds.

James River attempted an on-side kick to start the second half, but it was recovered by Bird. Donaldson seemingly had his third touchdown of the night on a 48 yard run, but it was called back by a holding penalty. Bird finally dented the scoreboard again, this time by Donaldson, who raced 51 yards for the score. Nick Lanier added the extra point to move the score to 28 – 0.

Marcus Banks played an outstanding game at quarterback, knowing when to run and when to hand off. He scored Bird’s 5th and final touchdown on a 39 yard run with 5:00 minutes left in the 3rd quarter and then it was up to the defense.

Graham Scholl led the Rapids in rushing with well over 100 yards. He led the Rapids scoring drive in the 3rd quarter that culminated on their scoring of the first play of the fourth quarter. Their attempt at a 2 point conversion failed, the Bird defense stood tall, dug in it’s heals and stopped the final Rapid scoring attempt late in the game. James River had 1st and goal from the 9 yard line and the defense stopped them at the one on 4th and goal. The defense was again led by DaMontre Blowe, who had 13 tackles (one for loss) and a pass deflection. Jaden Davis with 2 tackles for loss and an on-side kick recovery, and both Josea Cofield and Marcus Parham with a tackle for loss.

Next week, the Skyhawks enjoy the home field advantage as they host the visiting Huguenot Falcons on Dutchman Field at 7:00 pm next Friday.
