Lloyd C. Bird’s junior varsity boys basketball team went 13-2 this past season, only losing to Virginia Beach teams. The team consisted of 12 players ranging from 9th to 10th grade. They beat all the top local teams such as Monacan, Varina, and Manchester, each by an average of at least ten points. The Skyhawks suffered their only two losses of the season in the Tidewater area. Woodside was a nail biter and went down to the wire, with the Skyhawks losing by last second free throws.
“WIN” was and is the team motto. Playing hard is mandatory for these Skyhawks; nothing less will be accepted. The biggest goal for junior varsity was to go undefeated and be better than the previous teams. This year’s team has been one of the most favorable because of the will each player had
to learn and get better. They take pride in paying attention to detail and perfecting their craft.
Their coach reminded them daily that there is always room to get better, so every practice was treated the same and the team was pushed hard everyday.
This season, the hard work payed off.
