Still smarting from back-to-back losses to Manchester and Monacan, The Lloyd C. Bird Skyhawks celebrated Homecoming with a resounding 53 – 6 spanking of George Wythe. Undermanned from the start (Wythe only dressed 20 players), the Bulldogs fought valiantly against a determined Skyhawk team that was led by it’s defense and an outstanding, career night for JeVon La Pierre.
Bird won the toss and deferred. Wythe took the kickoff and held the ball for almost 3 minutes until Bulldog quarterback Maurice Lassiter threw his first interception to JeVon La Pierre, who returned it 68 yards for the Skyhawks first score. Bird got the ball back late in the first quarter and it was then C. J. Donaldson’s turn, scoring from 5 yards out to make it 14 – 0 at the end of the first quarter.
As the second quarter began, Bird had the ball deep in Bulldog territory, but the drive stalled, so Marcos Chavez came in to kick a 30 yard field goal. With 2:42 remaining in the half, JeVon La Pierre scored his second of three touchdowns, this time on special teams with a 72 yard punt return. Not to be outdone, La Pierre scored again with 12.2 second left on a 39 yard pass reception from Marcos Banks.
Bird received the second half kickoff. In at running back was Jeremiah Carter and he didn’t disappoint. Taking the opening hand off of the second half, he raced to the Wythe 1 yard line then scored on the second. Marcos Banks converted the 2 point conversion off of a high snap and Bird led 39 – 0.
On the ensuing Wythe position, the Bird defense forced a punt, only to fumble the return, which Wythe recovered and converted for their only score of the night, a 10 yard pass from Lassiter to Johnson.
Wanting to keep the clock in the running mode, the Skyhawks’ Mykael Anderson returned the kickoff 75 yards and Carter scored his second touchdown on the night from 13 yard out to go back to the running clock. Closing out the scoring was a 68 yard interception return by Benjamin Hendrickson.
Jeremiah Carter was the leading rusher with 101 yards on 4 carries and 2 touchdowns. DeMontre Blowe led the defense with a blocked punt, an onside kick recovery and 6 individual tackles. But the night belonged to JeVon La Pierre, who had 3 touchdowns, 3 interceptions for a total return yardage of 113 yards, along with his 39 yard pass reception for a score and a 72 yard punt return. The memories of those back-to-back losses are now a thing of the past. With the win, the Skyhawks improve to 6-3 while the Bulldogs fall to 0-9.
Next week, the Skyhawks welcome the Cosby Titans to Dutchman Field to celebrate Senior Night as well as the end of the regular season. Kickoff is 7:00 pm next Friday night.
