Hard to believe that another regular season of high school football has come to a close. In a Senior Night finale, the Lloyd C. Bird Skyhawks hosted their cross county rivals, the Cosby Titans. What would have had extreme playoff implications in most years, this Titan team was suffering through what would be the worst season in Cosby history.
Bird won the toss, deferred and Cosby proceeded to run their offense. The Bird defense held and forced a punt, which was returned deep into Cosby territory, only to be brought back to the Cosby 43. This, unfortunately, was the story of the night, as Bird had 3 touchdowns called back by the officiating crew. On the first play from scrimmage, Marcus Banks handed off to C. J. Donaldson and he took it all 43 yards for his first of three touchdowns on the night.
The second quarter saw Cosby drive the ball deep into Bird territory, only to fumble the exchange from quarterback to running back and Bird recovered on their 6 yard line. After driving the length of the field, only to have Marcus Chavez’s 34 yard field goal go wide, the Bird defense gave the ball back to Donaldson and company and C. J. responded with a 45 yard scoring run with Marcus Banks scoring on the 2 point conversion from the “muddle huddle” formation.
Not much went right for Cosby except on their next possession, Bird fumbled a punt and the Titans recovered. Their ensuing drive to the Bird 12 allowed for Kyle Lowe to make a 30 yard field goal for Cosby’s only points for the night.
The second half started with Jeremiah Carter scoring from 71 yards out on the first play, then 6 minutes later, Donaldson scored again, this time from 64 yards out. Quite a night for C. J., only 5 carries for 165 yards and three touchdowns.
Of course, it was the fourth quarter where the dam broke for the Titans. First, Marcus Banks hit JeVon La Pierre in stride on 3rd down for an 85 yard touchdown. Four minutes later, it became the Jeremiah Carter show with two more touchdowns, one for 16 yards and the second for 37 yards.Finally. Treshawn Mason capped the scoring, gaining all 75 yards on Bird’s last drive, scoring from 9 yards out.
Individually, it was the tailbacks that led the way; C. J. Donaldson 5 carries-165 yards and 3 TDs, Jeremiah Carter, 7 carries – 196 yards and 3 TDs, Treshawn Mason 7 carries 75 yards 1 TD. In addition to his sterling play in the defensive backfield, JeVon La Pierre had 4 pass breakups, along with 3 outstanding punt returns and an 85 yard pass for a Touchdown. DaMontre Blowe led all tacklers with 10 tackles, 4 for loss.
Next week, the Skyhawks will host the Blue Devils of Varina in the first round of the Region B, 5A playoffs at 7:00 pm on Dutchman Field.
